Deans, Directors & HoDs undergo orientation

The Human Resource Development section under the Registrar’s Secretariat has successfully organized a two-day orientation seminar for Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and Hall Masters to keep them abreast of their core responsibilities.

It was heart-warming seeing the middle and lower-level managers defy an early morning downpour on the second day of the seminar which lasted for hours to participate in this all-important session, which formed part of measures by the H.R section to sharpen their skills to enable them to discharge their roles effectively in line with the University’s core mandate.

There were presentations on Quality Assurance, Finance, Audit and I.T by the respective heads or representatives of these critical arms of the University.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah underscored the importance of the programme for both newly appointed and existing Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and Hall Masters, and asked them to take the presentations seriously.

Academic leadership

He said: “From time to time, it is important for us to understand our mandate as an institution of higher learning that is leading the youth of this country and beyond, especially in research, inventions and innovations as well as community service. It is equally important to gather periodically to share experiences so that together we make a headway.”

He tasked the participants, especially the HoDs, to demonstrate academic leadership and good character worthy of emulation by both students and staff and strive to leave positive footprints in the discharge of their duties.

He advised them to assist students to form good character and develop academic intelligence “so that upon completion, they could contribute their quota toward the development of the country and serve as good ambassadors of the University. Let us make conscious effort to justify the confidence reposed in us.”

Duties and Responsibilities

In a presentation on “the duties and responsibilities of Deans, HoDs and Directors”, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah implored them to be guided by the Technical Universities Act 2016, Act 922 (as Amended) and the University’s Statutes promulgated in 2019.

He reminded them on the need to maintain a high sense of discipline among both students and staff so that the University would be in a good position to produce graduates who are fit-for-purpose.

Prof. Korantwi-Barimah encouraged them to see themselves as members playing the same team complementing each other to achieve the overall goals.

“The team is Sunyani Technical University that we are all playing for, and we want the victory for the University. We at the top management alone cannot do it. You at the middle or lower-level management can also not do it alone but it takes all of us to move together. We have a lot to do, and we are all involved. Let’s get together to achieve the common goal so that posterity would be proud of us”, he concluded.

Supervisory roles

For his part part, the Registrar, Mr. Samuel Ankama Obour reminded the participants about the need to attach maximum seriousness to their respective supervisory roles for optimum results.

Among others, he touched on submission of reports on staff on leave, non-attendance of training programmes, blame game syndrome on campus and the need for them to step up their supervisory roles on their subordinates without fear or favour.

As part of the seminar some of the Deans, Directors, HoDs and Hall Masters shared their experiences with their colleagues on best managerial practices.

The Deputy Registrar in-charge of Human Resource Development, Stephen Yeboah, expressed his appreciation to all the participants and hoped that the lessons learnt at the seminar would positively impact on their output.
