Mission

The STU Library mission is to provide information services to support the conduct of research, teaching, and the promotion of learning as the main goal of the University.

Vision

The vision of the University Library is to make sure adequate and relevant teaching, learning, and research resources such as books, journals, and electronic resources are provided to enable the University to achieve its mission.

A Brief History

The Sunyani Technical University Library, one of Ghana’s most distinguished academic and research library is the central library of Sunyani Technical University. It is located on the main campus of the University. The library is a member of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH).

The library's collections include more than 13 thousand books, periodicals, research articles, speeches, dissertations, CDs, tapes. The library also offers access to extensive electronic resources. The Library is the nerve center for academic work in the University. All academic-related functions such as teaching, research, and learning find their support-base in the library where all types of documents are organized for easy access to members of the University community.

Library Collection

Print Materials

The Library has a number of volumes covering all subjects, from archaeology to zoology.

Non-Print Materials

The non-print materials consist of tapes, CDs and Online Resources.

Our Services

The core mandate of E. K. Agyei Library which is regarded as the pivot around which the academic and research activities of the University revolves is to provide information resources, learning facilities, and services to support the core business of the University, namely, teaching, learning, research, and public service.

The specific services provided by the E. K. Agyei Library System are as follows:

  • Availability of relevant contemporary textbooks for research and academic purposes with major emphasis on Technical and Vocational Materials.

  • Availability of E-Resource Center – Computer lab – staff and students can have access to extensive electronics resources free of charge. The library is manned by professionals who have experience and extensive know-how on how to access information from the internet and how to conduct academic research professionally. The E-Resource Center also provides Information Literacy Instructions to students and other members of the University community.

  • Availability of current periodicals (journals and magazines) of national and international repute e.g., TIME, National Geographic, Roads & Bridges, Good Housekeeping, etc. Our periodicals cut across all disciplines in this institution.

  • Availability of old and current newspapers esp. Daily Graphic, The Mirror. We have newspapers that date back to the year 2000.

  • Availability of Reprographic and Bindery services – Photocopying, scanning, Printing Services, and bindery service at moderate prices.

  • Institutional repository – where we keep dissertations, speeches, and other relevant institutional documents for consultation.

  • The Library also offers consultancy and training services to other academic libraries, school libraries, and special libraries.

  • Selective Dissemination of Information.

  • Current Awareness Service.

  • Learning and Research Support.

  • Advisory Services on Scholarly communication, Intellectual Property, Open Access, Institutional Repository, etc.

  • Library Orientation/Education

Sections of the University Library

E-Resource

The Computer Laboratory is used mainly to access information on the internet. Academic databases are also accessed from here. Help is provided in the use of the databases subscribed to. The Laboratory also offers printing services at affordable prices.

Electronic Support

The Electronic Support Department (ESD) offers technical support in the use of Information Technology (IT).

Technical Services Section

The Technical Services Section (TSS) of the University Library provides bindery, printing and other reprographic services for the library and the University community.

Collection Development / Acquisitions Section

The Collection Development department receives all library materials.

Cataloguing Section

Library materials are processed in this department and sent to the shelves.

Reference Section

The reference section houses the library’s special collections.

Circulation Section

This department is where items are processed for lending services.

Policies

LOANING OF BOOKS

Regular Books:

  • Students are not allowed to borrow books/periodicals from the library.

  • Registered Institutions may borrow up to 5 books for 1 month, renewable once only if not requested by another reader. Books borrowed may be recalled after 7 days if circumstances of the library so demand

  • Senior Staffs may borrow up to 2 books for 3 weeks, these may be renewed once only, and such books are subject to recall after 7 days.

  • Senior Members may borrow up to 4 books, for 4 weeks, subject to recall after 2 weeks if circumstances of the library so demand

  • Exchange programme students staying less than one semester cannot borrow library materials by themselves. The International Students Directorate or the programme Director would have to borrow for them. The same applies to visiting scholars who are staying less than a semester at the University. The department in which the person is located has to borrow for the visitor.

Lending and returning of books cease 30 minutes before closing time
