Management of the Sunyani Technical University (STU) has engaged the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of measures to introduce and discuss initiatives focused on financial literacy, securities, investment education, and investor protection.
Officials of SEC made up of Dr. Godwin Ansah, James Kuffor, and Matilda Agorsah engaged the Vice-Chancellor, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah; Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Julius Caesar Puoza, the Registrar, Mr. Stephen Yeboah and other members of STU Management.
Dr. Godwin Ansah, who led the SEC delegation, expressed gratitude for the partnership with STU and noted that the Commission was in the process of collaborating with various tertiary institutions because they provide an effective avenue for reaching out to young people and future professionals.
The delegation explained that the programme the collaboration entails educational seminars, webinars to provide continued learning, training programmes for selected members of the university community, and possible “training-of-trainers” initiatives to enable participants to share investment knowledge with others.
Dr. Ansah emphasized that the partnership with STU is designed to deliver sustainable impact and expressed optimism about building a long-term relationship with the university.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adinkrah-Appiah, welcomed the initiative, stressing that investment is a vital part of the economy. He added that collaborations of this nature would provide students with valuable knowledge and opportunities that will benefit them in their future careers.
The meeting highlighted the importance of educating students and the wider public on the relationship between risk and return, investor protection, and how to identify potentially fraudulent or unsuitable investment schemes.
STU management encouraged the SEC delegation to intensify its public education efforts, noting that financial literacy is particularly important in protecting individuals from losing their savings and failing to meet critical financial obligations.
