Orientation Workshop for 100 New Staff

An orientation workshop has been organised for a hundred newly recruited staff of the Sunyani Technical University (STU).

It was to formally welcome the new staff into the institution and keep them abreast of the University’s Statutes and all other relevant laws, rules and regulations about their work.

Opening the workshop, the Vice-Chancellor implored the new staff to be motivated by the core values of the University and excel in their various fields of endeavor.

He said STU aims at becoming one of the best technical universities not only in Ghana but in Africa and be able to influence socio-economic decisions and developments on the continent.

“We believe in excellence…...and so everything you’re doing here, you must look up to excellence. You should be able to excel. We also believe in competence, responsiveness, professionalism, competitiveness and collaboration.”

He charged them to read wide on the Technical Universities Act, the Universities Statutes and other relevant materials about their work and also exhibit the institution’s core values wherever they find themselves.

“What we don’t want to see is apathy because when you do that it will go against productivity and your personal development which will not help”, he added.

Prof Ing Adinkrah-Appiah also asked newly hired lecturers to make sure that they undertake research and publications as well as community service within the first six years of their stay in the institution to facilitate their progression in their chosen career.

“If you fail to undertake research or have the required number of publications in six years, there will be a grace period afterwhich you will be shown the exit. So, you do research and publications and also do what we call community service – you use your profession to help build the society without necessarily charging any fee.”

In a presentation, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Justice Solomon Korantwi-Barimah stressed the need for the participants to manage their time effectively in order to make a meaningful impact on the job.

“I want you to understand that teaching is a very tedious job. It requires a lot of time and sometimes you will be required to do two or three things at a time. So, if you don’t have the ability to manage your time well, you will be found wanting always and you would not be able to deliver”, he further explained.

He also added, “you must also be flexible, resilient and have the willingness to work for longer period of time.”

The Pro-VC also asked them to have the ability to inspire the students they teach, saying, “sometimes a student may be down psychologically, you become a counsellor at the point in time to be able to inspire them, bring new meaning to their lives…..”

The Registrar, Samuel Ankama Obour touched on STU’s historical background – from its inception in 1967 as Sunyani Technical Institute (SUTECH) to 1997 when it was converted into a Polytechnic before it attained its current status as a university in 2016.

He also explained University’s vision, mission and core values to the participants and also took them through some portions of the Technical Universities Act.
