Sunyani Technical University set to demolish all illegal structures on its encroached land

All illegal structures, including buildings on encroached land of Sunyani Technical University, will soon be demolished to pave way for the implementation of the University’s Strategic and Master Plans, Ing. Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah the Vice-Chancellor of the institution has warned.

The University has reached an advanced stage for the take-off of a 5,000-bed capacity hostel for its ever-increasing number of students but is struggling for a space for the project as a result of illegal encroachment by unscrupulous private developers who continue to put up all kinds of illegal structures despite consistent warnings by both the University authorities and the Sunyani Municipal Assembly.

This was made known by Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah when the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Honourable Ansu Kumi paid a one-day working visit to the University on Wednesday.

After a brief meeting between the MCE and Management of the University, the Vice-Chancellor led the MCE and his entourage to some portions of the institution’s land encroached upon by developers with impunity, which constitutes one-third of the total land of the institution.

“All these structures you see here are illegal. When the encroachment started some two or three years ago, the University marshalled forces to demolish more than 30 buildings. They took us to court but could not produce any document to support their case, and the case is still pending in courts”, he explained.

“As you can see, the developers are back and aggressively continuing with their illegal activities. This is a very serious matter and as a matter of urgency, the University is set to demolish all these structures in the coming days, he fumed”

On his part, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive of Sunyani, Hon. Ansu Kumi assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Assembly’s support towards demolishing of all unauthorized structures on the University land.

He said the Assembly will collaborate with the University to prevent further encroachment whilst steps are being taken to drive away those who are already developing on the land.
