STU Hosts Stakeholder Workshop on Drive Electric Initiative (DEI-Gh), an e-mobility programme spearheaded by the Energy Commission of Ghana.

Sunyani Technical University (STU) on March 25, 2025, hosted a Stakeholder Awareness and Sensitisation Workshop on the Drive Electric Initiative (DEI-Gh), an e-mobility programme spearheaded by the Energy Commission of Ghana, at the University’s Centre of Excellence in New Energy Vehicles and Green Technologies.

The workshop brought together participants from academia, industry, and the media to deliberate on the Draft Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure and Battery Swap Systems Regulation, as part of efforts to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework to guide Ghana’s transition to electric mobility.

The Energy Commission team was led by Ms. Joyce Caitlyn Ocansey, Programme Coordinator for the Drive Electric Initiative, who presented on developments in Ghana’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. Her presentation highlighted key areas, including EV charging infrastructure, baseline and market study reports, established standards, and ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles. She also emphasised the importance of regulatory frameworks in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable deployment of EV infrastructure across the country.

Welcoming participants on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of STU, Prof. Evans Zoya Kpamma, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing electric mobility. He noted that the concept of electric vehicles represents a critical transition from hydrocarbon dependence to cleaner energy sources and aligns with the establishment of the University’s Centre of Excellence.

Prof. Kpamma further highlighted the importance of collaboration between academia and industry, expressing optimism that the engagement with the Energy Commission would support the operationalisation of electric vehicle systems in Ghana. He added that STU staff who have undergone training in EV technologies are well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to the development of the legislative instrument currently under consideration by Parliament.

In his remarks, the Director of the Centre of Excellence, Rev. Eng. Dr. Frank Frimpong, indicated that the workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to review progress made by the Energy Commission since 2019 and to contribute to shaping the regulatory framework. He emphasised that the inclusive nature of the engagement, involving participants from various institutions and the media, would help chart a clear path forward for the EV agenda in Ghana.

Discussions during the workshop focused on the development of standards for EV charging infrastructure, ongoing pilot initiatives such as solar-powered charging systems, and strategies to promote awareness and adoption of electric mobility solutions.

The event also aligns with STU’s broader strategic vision to assemble and produce electric vehicles as part of its medium- to long-term plans, contributing to Ghana’s industrialisation agenda and sustainable energy transition.

The workshop concluded with interactive sessions that allowed participants to ask questions and provide input toward the proposed regulations, reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing electric mobility for environmental sustainability and economic development.
