International Relations and Institutional Linkage Directorate (IRILD)

Sunyani Technical Univesity

The office of International Relations and Institutional Linkage Directorate was established in 2017 to co-ordinate, promote and manage all of the University’s international relations and institutional linkage agreements with other institutions, both national and international. The promotion of community engagements, and entrepreneurship development are other core businesses of the directorate.

FUNCTIONS

  • Search for credible institutions for collaborations; prepare Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for partnership agreements with potential partner universities for academic, research and industrial collaboration; interact with existing collaborating partners and seek opportunities to implement joint activities for mutual benefits.

  • The promotion and advertisement of the programmes of the University to international students and researchers.

  • The organization of summer schools and orientation programmes for international students.
  • The provision of guidance and counselling services for international students.
  • The coordination of staff and student exchange and external staff training programmes.

  • Creating and maintaining a comprehensive database of international students and external assistance programmes.

  • Provide regular updates on the database of the University’s partners in respect to national and international academic programmes.

  • Handle matters involving both staff and student international visits and exchange programmes.

  • Community engagements.

  • Entrepreneurship training.

The Directorate consists of the following two units:

  1. Business/Entrepreneurship Development and External Funding Unit (BEDEFU)
  2. Brong-Ahafo Research and Extension Centre (BAREC) and Community Engagement.

The Directorate is headed by a Dean who reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor. The Dean is assisted in his/her duties by a board (called the IRILD Board), made up of the Dean (Chairperson), the Head of Academic Affairs Directorate, one (1) representative from each Faculty elected by the Faculty Board, one (1) student, who is not in the first year, appointed by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), one (1) International Student, a representative from the Directorate of Finance and in Attendance, the Senior Assistant Registrar in the Directorate of International Programmes and Institutional Linkages. The Board provides advice and direction to the Dean.

Collaborations

Sunyani Technical University (STU) believes that the aims of higher education with respect to teaching/learning, research/discovery, and community engagement can be better achieved by dedicating to strong collaborations with other academic institutions, organizations and industries. STU, therefore, seeks to collaborate with interested institutions, organizations and industries for cooperation in relevant areas such as:

  • Study/Work Abroad
  • Joint Research/Grant Application
  • Franchising
  • Staff Mobility
  • Staff Development and Capacity Building
  • Student Internship

It is crucial to note that the respective responsibilities of STU, the partner University/Institution/Organization and the staff/student involved (where applicable) will vary depending on the type of collaboration. There are also variations in the complexity of the partnerships and in the time required for the development and establishment of partnerships. A proposed partnership may combine more than one type of collaboration.

Study/Work Abroad (Student Exchange)

Study/Work Abroad is an opportunity for students to study or do internships abroad whilst undertaking their programme of study. Study/work abroad could be both incoming and outgoing in the form of Bilateral Exchange or one-way study abroad.

Joint Research/Grant Application

STU and the partner University/Organization jointly develop and deliver a research programme or jointly develop proposals for grant applications in areas of mutual interest. The responsibilities of each institution in financial, administrative and quality assurance matters, etc., are to be spelt out in the agreement.

Staff Capacity Building

A strong staff is a fuel that enhances any University’s ability to develop its own intellectual resources, promote innovation and knowledge and optimize its capacity. STU is open to a range of capacity building partnerships, especially in the training of staff to attain a Ph.D.

Franchising

STU authorizes an approved Partner University to deliver (and sometimes access) part or all of an approved STU programme, which leads to STU award. STU could also deliver (and sometimes access) part or all of an approved Partner University’s programme, which leads to the Partner University’s award.

Staff Mobility

Staff mobility provides an opportunity for staff of partner institutions to spend a short period in another institution (normally overseas) to conduct field research, learn about cultures and share expertise with contemporaries in teaching, research, or administration. Staff mobility can have an important role in capacity building with partner institutions and can provide development opportunity for the individuals concerned.
